Recruitment Drive at Western Vance High School
On April 28, 2016 Joan Robinson, BCL Director, and Advanced Human Service Worker students, Sylvia Birdsong and Malcolm Benns, conducted a recruitment drive at Western Vance High School. The WVHS Seniors will graduate on June 3, 2016. Sixteen students from WVHS expressed interest in enrollment at Kittrell JCC. A center tour is scheduled for Thursday, May 5, 2016. Following the tour, students will meet with an Outreach & Admissions Counselor from WEN to began the pre-enrollment process.
Western Vance High School Seniors Tour Kittrell Job Corps Center
On May 5, 2016 Western Vance High School seniors visited and toured Kittrell Job Corps Center. Matt Gale Center Director met and greeted the seniors by welcoming them to the Center. He also conducted a question and answer session. Joan Robinson, Business Community Liaison Director (BCL), conducted a campus tour. Katina Turner, WEN Admissions & Career Transition Services, provided admission information about the program and started the pre-enrollment process. A total of fifteen seniors participated.

On May 6, 2016 Kittrell recognized students that have completed Career Preparation Period (CPP). Students presented a power point presentation that identified their 30, 60, and 90 day goals and accomplishments. The celebration provided an opportunity for Kittrell staff and other fellow students to listen and provide encouragement and recognition to the CPP Graduates for achieving this milestone.

Kittrell Celebrates Asian-American History Month
0n May 11, 2016 the Midnight Blue Martial Arts Academy joined Kittrell Job Corps Center in it’s Asian History Month celebration. Judy Stainback, 3rd Dan, shared information on Asian history, including history of the country, population, culture and the origins of martial arts. Owner, Master Kimberly Gupton, introduced the Martial Arts Instructors and students as well as the history and information on Midnight Blue Martial Arts Academy. Mrs. Gupton shared the benefits of martial arts training and self-defense. “I was very impressed with the attentiveness and excitement of the Job Corps students as they watched on the edge of their seats. They cheered and cheered and applauded for our students”, said Master Kimberly Gupton.
Felicitas Perez-Rodriguez Accepted Into Advance Training Program TCU
Felicitas Perez-Rodriguez transferred to TCU Advanced Training Program at the Gary Job Corps Center to begin her eight month training in Customer Service on May 17th. After completion, she will start internship at United Airlines. She enrolled at Kittrell in July 21, 2015 and met all requirements to become a graduate. While enrolled, she obtained her High School Diploma and completed the Office Assistant Program with her primary certification. She has been very involved in center leadership activities working with the Peer Leadership Coordinator. Ms. Perez-Rodriguez, Y2Y President, organized an interactive anti-bullying skit, which showed how bullying effect today’s youth that attracted over 60 attendees held at the Boys & Girls Club Center in Henderson, NC. She has worked alongside the BCL Director to conduct presentations in area schools and youth-serving agencies. Ms. Perez-Rodriguez has assisted in facilitating Domestic Violence Marches and Night Out Against Crime event to support and promote a positive Center image both on Center and in the community. She recently spoke at the Career Transition Readiness (CTR) May 5th Grad-90 Celebration where she encouraged students to get involved. Felicitas has been excited about the TCU Program since hearing about it.
We wish Ms. Perez Rodriguez well and she will be missed here at Kittrell!
Work Based Learning and Employer Partnership with HealthCare Options
Nursing Assistant Trade students attended an Employment Workshop, sponsored by HealthCare Options on May 11th. The event was coordinated by Joan Robinson, BCL, and Johnathan Faulcon, Nursing Assistant Instructor.
A Work-Based Learning (WBL) partnership was established for the students in the Nursing Assistant Trade. This agency can also provide home WBL opportunities for students from the Greensboro, Charlotte, Fayetteville, Raleigh and Durham, NC areas.
Eaton Johnson Middle School Provide Proctor (EOG) Training for Kittrell JCC Students
On May 11, 2016 Eaton Johnson Middle School EOG Test Coordinator, Sharon Turner visited Kittrell Job Corps Center and provided Proctor Workshop Training for students who will assist with school End of Grade Test scheduled for May 24-25, 2016. During the workshop Ms. Turner discussed and shared the Proctor’s Guide outline, duties and responsibilities of the proctors and what they are permitted to do during a test administration. Students will help the test administrator ensure testing occurs fairly and uniformly by monitoring to reduce distractions, distribute test materials and direct students to testing locations.
Kittrell Participates in Support Our Veterans Fundraiser
On May 12, 2016 Medical Administrative Assistant (MAA) students Jada Hawkins and Kala Bridges, along with Joan Robinson BCL Director, volunteered two hours to assist the Disable American Veteran (DAV) and the Golden Corral Restaurant with its Support Our Veteran Fundraiser . The fundraiser was held to send veterans’ children to Camp Corral in June 2016. Camp Corral is a summer camp for children of wounded, injured or fallen military service members. During the event a total of $69.00 was collected from the patrons visiting the restaurant.

WEN NC Outreach & Admission Career Fair
On June 2, 2016, Kittrell Job Corps Center CTR students, CTR Instructor Shawndra Brooks, Workkeys Instructor, Tonya Sneed and the BCL Director, Joan Robinson, attended a Career Fair sponsored by WEN NC Outreach and Admissions. It was held at the NCWorks Career Center, Raleigh, NC. Students attended with ready made resumes and completed job applications on the spot. Students also took this opportunity to talk with WEN OA/Career Transition Specialist staff and students from Schenck, Oconaluftee and the Lyndon B. Johnson Job Corps Centers. There were ten representing businesses from throughout the state that represented all trades. WEN also provided motivational presentations. This was a great networking opportunity for both students and staff.
Kittrell Students Help To Raise Money
On Saturday, May 28, 2016, Kittrell Job Corps Center students along with the BCL Director sponsored a carwash fundraiser for the Henderson Lions Club at the Advance Auto Parts, Henderson, NC. A total of $112.00 was raised. All proceeds will provide funds for the vision impaired. “I take my hat off to the Kittrell Job Corps Center students and staff for their hard work and efforts in supporting our Club,” said Melvin Hanks, Vice President.

Social Development Hosts New Students Welcome Social
The Social Development Department held a New Student Social on June 1, 2016. New students were greeted by the Student Government Association (SGA) Board, Independent Living Advisors and Counselors. During the social they were served pizza, chips and drinks.
CSIO Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
On June 2, 2016, the Center Standards Incentive Officer (CSIO) Department held a ribbon cutting ceremony to introduce their new incentive closets. CSIO Supervisor, Mr. Kent, and CSIO Officer, Mrs. Henderson, have updated the Center’s incentive program. The incentive program recognizes, promotes and encourages the positive behavior from students during the training day and evening hours. A separate incentive closet, which is called the” TOP DAWG Incentive Closet, has been added for students who receive a CSSR score of 4.3 or higher. The TOP DAWG Incentive Closet gives students a variety of incentives to choose from, based on the amount of weeks they’ve earned a CSSR score of 4.3 or higher. Mr. Kent and Mrs. Henderson are excited about the updates that have taken place and believe that if they invest in our students it would motivate our students to invest in themselves.
Advanced Human Services Worker Open House
The Advanced Human Services Worker Program held their official open house on June 2, 2016. Center students and staff received a warm welcome, toured and enjoyed refreshments. The AHSW students were excited to show off their new “digs” and welcomed center staff and students who ventured by. The AHSW students recognize their role in promoting a positive normative culture and their new classroom puts them in position to mentor, model, and monitor new incoming Career Preparation Period students. AHSW instructor, Mr. Patton, challenges his students to carry on the “Culture of Care” that he espouses. The facility was completely and professionally renovated by Facility Maintenance trade students as well as contributions by Brick Masonry students working under the supervision of Mr. Edward Chavis, Facility Maintenance Instructor.
