Career Technical Training- CTST Project

Kittrell Job Crops Center Brick Masonry Trade students and Jameel Sheriff, Instructor, are currently working on a CTCT Project . They are adding on to the columns along the roadside.  After the columns are completed, the fence will be installed to enhance the safety and  beautification of the center.

Kittrell Job Corps Center Visits Washington, DC for Capitol Hill Meetings

On March 16, 2016 Matt Gale, Center Director, visited the Senators and United States      Representative in their offices on Capitol Hill.  He discussed the Job Corps Program, employer partners, success stories, community involvement and the impact on the community. Meetings were held at the offices of US Representative George Holding, Senator Richard Burr and Senator Thom Tillis. During his meetings, he provided program updates.

KJCC students took a trip to the Kittrell Fire Department in Kittrell, NC on Tuesday, March 15, 2016. Students registered to vote on center on February 11, 2016. Student Desaree Moore was happy to show off her  “I Voted” sticker after voting for the first time.  “I am excited to cast my vote for the first time. I feel like I have really made a difference,” Moore said.

Kittrell Job Corps Center Host Community Relations Council Meeting

Kittrell JCC held its Quarterly Community Relations Council Meeting on March 17, 2016 .  Joan Robinson, BCL Director, called the meeting to order, provided the welcome and the introduction of the guest. Dorothy Sidberry, WEN OA/Job Developer, made a request for members to refer eligible young adults. She shared the many opportunities available for the Job Corps students.  The CTT Manager shared  CTST projects, training being provided to students and certifications. Youth 2 Youth                Ambassadors Felicitas P. Rodriguez and Kristina Graham gave on overview of the Y2Y Anti-Bullying initiative, activities held on and off center and an invite to their Y2Y Anti-Bullying Play scheduled for March 30, 2016 at the Boys and Girls Club. Norman Turner, Deputy Center Director,  provided center updates and closing remarks. He  discussed the OBS, Community Partnerships, CTST Projects,  Advance Training Programs and the Youth 2 Youth Anti-Bullying initiative.  BCL  Director  reminded the group that tours are held each Thursday  at 10:00am and to refer  potential applicants. She provided a date for  June 2016 meeting.

KJCC’s AHSW Students Help Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

March 17, 2016 Rosa Bullock, CSIO Supervisor  and the Advanced Human Service Worker students Celebrated St. Patrick’s Day, by providing students with On- the Spot Incentives –Store Bucks and Green Pencils.  CSIO Supervisor and the Advance Humans Service Students toured the campus and classroom. Students were elated and all joined in the fun with the KJCC Lucky Charm  Pencils for St. Patrick’s Day.

Kittrell Job Corps Center’s Monthly Student Awards Program was held on March  23, 2016.  Students were recognized for exhibiting positive behavior and performance on Center. They received an Award Certificate and items from the Incentive Table.  Matt Gale, Center Director, expressed gratitude for  the students                             accomplishments during the event.  Awards were given in the following areas;  Center  Director,  DCD,  BCL/Community Service,   Counselor ,  Academic, Career Tech. Training,  Career Preparation Period,  Safety, and  Dormitory.

The Brick Masonry Trade was awarded the Trade of the Month for their hard work and dedication conducting beautification and CTST projects around the campus.

Kittrell Job Corps Center’s Youth 2 Youth  (Y2Y) Ambassador President, Felicitas Perez, Y2Y Ambassador, Kristina Graham, Y2Y Ambassador, Shavada Rosenboro, and  BCL Director, Joan Robinson,  visited the Vance County Learning Center on March 23, 2016.  The Ambassadors spoke with the students  about anti-bullying and non-violence.  During their presentation they requested that the students not only  take a stand for themselves, but for others as well. The Ambassadors talked about the various types of bullying and steps to take to stop bullying.  Vance County  Learning  Center  students  enjoyed the role play demonstrating  bullying with the Ambassadors.  A  question and answer session was held at the end of  the demonstration .

Kittrell Job Corps Center’s BCL Director, Joan Robinson, and WEN OA/ Job Developer  held a live radio broadcast at WIZS 1450-AM Radio Station in Henderson, NC.  They provided program information  along with the benefits of the Job Corps Program.  The main focus was to share information on Job Corps to potential applicants.

WEN Outreach & Admissions Counselors Milton Kennedy (Winston Salem, NC) and  Tia Hunter (Greensboro, NC) attended  Kittrell Job Corps Center’s  New Students Welcome on March 17, 2016. They  joined center staff to introduce themselves to          students and welcome them to Kittrell JCC. While on center WEN conducted Focus Groups with students and met with staff.  Norman Turner, DCD provided a                motivational welcome and encouraged  students to establish goals and stay focus on achieving their goals.

Youth 2 Youth Performance for Peace

Kittrell Job Corps Center students share anti-violence messages and resources with local youth at the Boys and Girls Club of Henderson, NC on March 30, 2016. The Center’s Youth 2 Youth group promoted peace through an interactive, anti-bullying play. Youth 2 Youth/Partners 4 Peace, (Y2Y) , is a violence-prevention initiative created by and led by Job Corps students nationwide.  Kittrell Job Corps Center is dedicated to preventing violence on its campus and in the community. “ I feel that our play was a huge success, the message that we took to the community was well        received”, said Felicitas Perez Rodriguez, Y2Y Ambassador President.  Participation in this effort was local middle school and high school students that attended at no cost.  Approximately 65 were in attendance.  Members of the  Center’s CRC attending             included Dolly Burwell from Congressman GK Butterfield’s Durham, NC District  Office, Henderson Mayor, Eddie Ellington, City Councilwoman Marian Williams and others.

Xerox Corporation Employment Workshop

March 30th, 2016 Deron Fleeton, Recruiter with Xerox Corporation Raleigh, North Carolina, Held an Employment Workshop for center students. During the workshop, he spoke to them about the position they were hiring for, such as the job title, requirements for the position, pay, hours and the hiring process. He also was able to speak with the students individually to see what their goals were and what they want to do in life. He concluded their one-on-ones with a prescreen interview asking them a series of questions about their past experiences with employment and going over what they can expect in the job on a day to day bases. There is four locations where Xerox has sites, such as Cary, Henderson and two locations in Raleigh, NC.

Kittrell Hosts Women’s Day Program

March 31, 2016 Women’s Day Program sponsor by the Wellness Department and other center staff to provide health related information for our female students. Small seminars was held in five different classrooms in the CTT building. Ms. Somerville, Medical Office Instructor, provided information” Dress for appropriate size in workplace with a fashion show to demonstrate  the appropriateness”, Ms. Falcon, CNA instructor provided information on personal hygiene as it relate to being a young lady”,  Mr. Brown, academic instructor, provided insight, “ how a man see a woman, Ms. Bullock, CSIO, demonstrated,” how to wear make-up appropriately”, and Ms. Kittrell and Ms. Fisher CTS/CTR,” impress upon the students the important to  dress for success on your job”. Each student was greeted by staff and presented with a flower as they enter the CTT Building.

After, the seminar were held students escorted to the gym for more enrichment of knowledge present by the Center Physician, Ms. Audrey Tinsley, PA.  The gym was decorated with multiple pastel color such pink, yellow, green, blue, lavender and balloon.  Ms. Tinsely capture the attention of the students and staff alike, bring the history of women and how the life has change from one generation to another. She also,    express how important for student to choose people who are successful or those who want the same quality of success in life and hang out with them. Ms. Tinsley share the value in a women and what’s the different between a woman and lady. The more she spoke about relationship and life itself the more the student amazed by her. Refreshment was served to student and staff and some even received a tea cup from the previous Tea Party held earlier in the month.

Beating the Odds Seminar Held at Kittrell JCC

March 31, 2016, BCL Director and Social Development sponsored a Purpose 4 Living Inc, Beating the Odds Seminar. Kelly A. Arrington the founder of Purpose 4 Living Inc is a former Job Corps graduate joined by her subject matter Expert Coach, Patricia Burton and Mark Thomas, Motivation Coach also a former Job Corps Graduate.

Ms. Kelly A. Arrington, Mark Thomas both shared their Job Corps experiences and encourage them to stay away from negativity and surround themselves with others that are smarter than them.

Ms. Arrington expressed that this was her way of giving back to the program that saved her life by offering students the opportunity to participate in the “Beating the Odds” $500 Scholarship.  Students are to write an Essay to express how they overcame obstacles in their life and how they plan to continue to Beat the Odds. staff will return with Brochures and Posters to display the one page double spaced Essay. Academic standards are not a requirement for this Scholarship, this Scholarship is all about “Beating the Odds” and not allowing your current circumstances dictate your future.

Kittrell Facility Maintenance and Brick Masonry Students Work at Canyon Stone

Kittrell Facility Maintenance and Brick Masonry students conducting hands on at their paid work-based learning site at Canyon Stone in Youngsville, N.C. They are removing stones from the molds and packaging them for shipping on the product finishing line. Student Titus Colvin expressed, “I appreciate the opportunity to work at Canyon Stone. It is  helping me to be better at accomplishing a task working as a team, as well as being efficient in doing the job!”

These students are excited about working and gaining work experience in their trade area and of course earning $10.00 hourly at Canyon Stone.

Employer Partnership Established with Hand-n-Hand Cleaning Service

Travis Allen, Owner of Hand-n-Hand Cleaning Services, shared with the students that not  only does he offer employment opportunities, but  he provides transitional housing as well.  He shared that he has several cleaning agencies. Students will perform janitorial duties cleaning office building’s earning $10.00 per hour.  Prior to employment, students are required to take a critical thinking,                      communication and job readiness course taught by Mr. Allen. This will be an extended day training course to be held in the Student Union TV Room on May 3, 2016 from 6:00pm to 7:15pm.

Kittrell Job Corps Center’s April Grad-90 Celebration

Kittrell Job Corps Center Graduate Shavada Rosenboro was the guest speaker at the April Grad-90 Celebration. She talked to the group about her success at the center and in her Office Assistant Trade. She encouraged the group with the words, “you can do it, when you put your mind to it.” Shavada will begin working April 25th, 2016 at Xerox  Business Solutions in Raleigh, NC as a Technical Support Person earning $11 an hour.

The event celebrated 70 Grad-90 students who enjoyed a lunch prepared and served by the Culinary Arts Students under the direction of Chef Kevin Fabretti. CTR Coordinator, Diane Fisher, shared information with the group on  Advanced Training opportunities with TCU and Human Services Worker. Student Ahmed Herron, AHSW student, shared information about the program and some of the things they are learning in their trade. The event closed with drawings for a variety of door prizes.

Career Preparation Period (CPP) Graduates for April 8, 2016

On April 8, 2016 Kittrell Job Corps Center recognized students that have completed Career Preparation Period (CPP). Students presented a power point presentation that identified their 30, 60, and 90 day goals and accomplishments. The celebration          provided an opportunity for Kittrell staff and other fellow students to listen and provide encouragement and recognition to the CPP Graduates for achieving this milestone.

Durham County Offers Kittrell Students Employment Opportunities

An Employment Workshop was conducted on April 12, 2016, for students interested in employment with the Durham County Detention Center. Lt. Alicia S. McKinney provided information on job openings, requirements, duties, responsibilities and benefits. Lt. McKinney also provided interview tips for the group. She explained that the starting salary for staff is $28,000 yearly and upon completion of the academy, the salary will increase to $32,210. Benefits include health, dental, 401-K and uniforms. Prior to the workshop ending, students were able to ask Lt. McKinney questions about her career and about working as a Detention Officer. All participants received promotional items as an incentive to strive for excellence.
